Butterfly Creek

Butterfly Creek

Eastbourne, Wellington, New Zealand

Popular summer picnic area for the people of Eastbourne.

The tracks have been upgraded in recent years so that the 200 m climb up over the hills behind Eastbourne is not so difficult. The tracks now are wide and zig-zag. There are some good viewing spots across the harbour and to the South Island on a clear day.

Tracks lead up either from Kowhai Street in Eastbourne, or from behind the Bus Barn on Muritai Road about half a kilometre south of Eastbourne. About 1 km along the track from Kowhai Street is a junction where you can take a longer, ridge line route to MacKenzie Street. Otherwise continue straight along the track for about 15 minutes to the Butterfly Creek picnic area. This is a shady spot with picnic tables and a creek, and can be quite crowded on a summers day.

Allow about 1.5 hours to walk to Butterfly Creek and back from either Muritai Road or Kowhai Street entrances. Add another hour to exit at MacKenzie Street.

Getting there

There is plenty of parking near the Bus Barn on Muritai Road, and there are also public toilets nearby.

Other notes

Total fire ban in the area. Track is not really suitable for cycling.
