Description
Pukaha Mt Bruce is a DoC native bird sanctuary with a nocturnal Kiwi house and other large aviaries with Kokako, Parakeets, Kaka and eel feeding. There is an admission charge ($15 adults) but after viewing the birds you can go for a 4 km walk through the bush of Mt Bruce behind the DoC centre.
The bush walk is signposted from the main track about 200 metres from the visitor centre. The track has recently been upgraded and is now wide, gravel base, and zig-zags up the hill to the lookout. You can go to the lookout and back (1.5 hours return) or complete the loop which comes back down near the California Redwoods. The loop is about 4 km and the estimated time to complete is 2 hours (about an hour for fit walkers).
