Description

Beginning on Kahu Road a few hundred metres from Postgate Drive Path this is a rougher path down the hillside with views across Whitby harbour. The track starts as a single concrete path, but runs out after a few hundred metres. Clearly the intention is to seal the track all down the hill. Near the bottom there is a side track to Kiriwai Road. At the bottom near SH58, pedestrians are encouraged to use the underpass to cross the road to the shore - the underpass is decorated with hand prints and is worth a look.

The coastal track around Golden Gate peninsula is not marked, just follow the edge of the shore. This should be done at low tide - at high tide you will get wet feet. Clambering along the rocks can be slippy, so good footwear is required. In summer this is a very pleasant walk.

On the other side of the peninsula you join up again with SH58. Walk along the coast for a few hundred metres and you can walk inland up to Browns Bay Lookout. There is also an access way to Leeward Drive via Bosun Terrace.

Getting there

You can join this walkway from Kahu Road, or from SH58.

Other notes

This is rougher than the other walkways in the area. Good footwear is necessary.
