Cattle Ridge Track
Name
Cattle Ridge Track
Location
Wainuiomata, Wellington, New Zealand
Overview
Bush walk ridge track in Catchpool Valley
Grade
Intermediate
Access
Foot
Description
The walk along the ridge (370 - 420 metres) is a very pleasant bush walk providing an excellent example of NZ native bush. Despite what the brochures may say, you do not get more than a glimpse back to Wellington and the harbour. Most of the track is in bush. Tree roots are a nuisance in a few areas. The track is well formed, but keep an eye on the orange triangles marking the route as there are one or two side tracks. There is wooden post marking Browns Track near the river end which leads steeply down to Orongorongo River.
Starting from the Catchpool top carpark, walk along the main track and up Butcher Track and then left at the top on to the Cattle Ridge Track. Allow about hours to walk along the ridge and drop back down to the main Catchpool track near the river.
Getting there
Catchpool is on the Coast Road about 12 km south of Wainuiomata. There is a large carpark with toilets at the end of the road about 1.5 km from the entrance.
Other notes
The gates to Catchpool open at 8 am, and close at dusk (the time varies through the year and is posted at the gate and at the top carpark). As this is a Kiwi area, all dogs must be on a lead and stay on the track (or preferably left at home).
