Description

This track is the continuation of Maungakotukutuku Road from the point where the road ends for normal vehicles just before a couple of stream crossings. 4WD vehicles, motor bikes and quad bikes continue from this point, but if you are not in a 4WD vehicle you can park at the turning circle and walk or cycle from this point following the 4WD road through the forest. It is not possible to go all the way to Nikau Valley (where it joins up with Mahaki Road) as there are currently forestry operations and the Nikau Valley end crossing private land. However, you can go about 2 km north along Mangakotukutuku Road and there are other forestry track leading off the main road to explore.

The road ends abruptly where there is a logging operation currently in progress.

Getting there

From Paraparaumu drive south down Valley Road and then left on to Maungakotukutuku Road. Continue to the very end of Maungakotukutuku Road, which is about 4 km from the Perhams carpark. The end of the road is identified by arriving at a stream crossing. There is a turning circle where you can park the car.

I don't believe there is any public access from Mahaki Road in Nikau Valley.

Other notes

Watch out for motor vehicles along the track - motor bikes, 4WD vehicles, quad bikes.
