Description

Field Hut lies near the bushline, approximately 6 km from Otaki Forks. From the carpark, go down to the river and cross the swing bridge. Field Hut is signposted - you head up the hill instead of left (Waitawaewae) or right (Arcus loop walk). The track up the hill has recently been upgraded, and whilst you ascend quickly to 500 metres it is a wide gravel track. The track enters the bush and continues to Field Hut at around 850 metres. The walk is a constant climb but the gradient is reasonable - there is relatively flat section for a while at around 600 metres, but expect 2 hours of continual ascent). Although the sign says 3 - 4 hours from Otaki Forks, most trampers do it in 2 - 2.5 hours. You don't need tramping boots if you are just going to Field Hut and back (good running shoes are fine).

Field Hut has 20 bunks and you can stay overnight, but note it is quite popular at weekends and you probably won't be alone. It is heated. If you are staying overnight you need to pay DOC fees for Field Hut (usually 1 or 2 tickets for huts in the Tararuas).

If you are doing a day walk, have lunch and then return to Otaki Forks. 30 minutes further up is Table Top at 1000 metres, which can be a good spot for playing in snow in winter. You can continue to Kime Hut, which is part of the Southern Crossing route, and is about 2 hours from Field Hut.

Getting there

Otaki Gorge Road is signposted inland immediately before the bridge into Otaki on SH1 (southern end). Follow the road to the end. There are a couple of sections of gravel road and the road is narrow in a couple of places near the end. There are several carparks - for day walkers and overnight long-term parking.

Other notes

There is an intentions book at the caretakers house, which you should sign. Make sure you are properly prepared for tramping in the Tararuas - food and drink, warm waterproof clothing, and your intentions are known to other people.
