Location
South Wairarapa, Wairarapa, New Zealand
Overview
Dept of Conservation track round a marshy pond near Lake Wairarapa
Grade
Easy
Access
Bike and Foot
Description
The area is used by duck shooters in season, but otherwise is fairly quiet. The walk is a well mown grassy track across the top of a stop-bank between Matthews lagoon and Boggy Pond. Although grassy, the ground is hard and uneven so walking isn't always easy. It would be possible to cycle the track, but watch for 4WD wheel ruts. The track goes 75% round the lagoon, but the last section joining back to Parera Road is private land and is fenced off. The lake is shallow and boggy.
Return the same way.
Getting there
Travelling from Featherston towards Marinborough, turn right off SH53 on to Kahutara Road (signposted to Lake Ferry). Turn right in to Parera Road about 20 km down Kahutara Road, which is a gravel road. Look for a DOC sign about 4 km on the left, a few hundred metres before Parera Road goes through a large bend to the left. You can park safely on the grass beside the gate.
