Description

From the bottom, this track initially crosses an open grassy area between houses. It then enters a pleasant gully that is predominantly filled with mature ferns – hence the name, presumably.

Once you enter the gully the track climbs almost continuously, with an average gradient of 15% and some sections being more like 30%, making for a solid climb.

The track surface is firm and wide, with a gravel base.

Approaching the ridge line, the vegetation gradually changes to be a more usual mix of ferns, birch, and beech forest.

At the top, head 0.3km to the east (turn left), along Rata Ridge, to find the top of Zigzag. Alternatively, 1.5km to the west (turn right) is the top of Lees Grove which ends only 0.2km around the road from the bottom of this track – making for a nice circuit.

Getting there

Bottom end is on Gardiner Grove, between numbers 19A and 19B.

Top meets Rata Ridge via a stile at a well sign-posted T-intersection.
