Connects Karori Sanctuary to Trelissick park

A pleasant 2 hour walk from the Trelissick Park entrance at the bottom of Ngaio gorge, through Otari-Wilton bush and Karori Cemetery to Karori Sanctuary. You will need transport at both ends, or it is a 4 hour return trip.

Starting from the Ngaio gorge end, there is mostly flat walk alongside Kaiwharawhara stream with the occasional glimpse of the Johnsonville railway line. There are a number of well formed bridges. Follow the signs through Wightwicks Field to Churchill Drive. Turn left and walk along the footpath past the Crofton Downs shopping mall, go down the hill and cross over into Otari-Wilton bush entrance. This is another pleasant bush walk beside a stream. Follow the signs to Karori Cemetery / Karori Sanctuary. Eventually you will emerge into Karori Cemetery - follow the signs to exit on Seaforth Terrace and then walk along Seaforth Terrace and turn left downhill on to Whitehead Road. You pick up the signs again for Karori Sanctuary across the road which takes a shortcut to old Karori Road. From here you walk along the pavement up to Chaytor Street besdie the park, cross Birdwood Terrace, and then walk down Waiapu Road to Karori Sanctuary.

Getting there

At the Ngaio gorge end you can park off Ngaio gorge at the second entrance to Trelissick Park (there is no off-street parking at the bottom entrance). Alternatively the Kaiwharawhara train station isn't far away, and there is a bus stop at the bottom of Ngaio Gorge.

You can park near Karori Sanctuary at the other end, though parking can be scarce on a sunny weekend. The Karori bus stops on Chaytor Street near Karori tunnel.

For a mid-way park, there is a large carpark at the Wilton house entrance to Otari-Wilton bush off Churchill Drive.

Other notes

Cycling not permitted in Trelissick Park or Otari-Wilton bush.
