Ohakune, Ruapehu, New Zealand
Gentle walk through native forest to lake shore
This is a DOC nature reserve that is being developed in to a pest free mainland island. Kiwi are present in the forest (but will only be seen or heard at night). The lower lake is about 5 minutes walk from the car park, and the upper lake about 15 minutes further on. There is a loop track around the upper lake.
Travelling from Ohakune to Waiouru on SH49, the turn-off is on the left about 14 km from Ohakune near Kariori. The road crosses a railway line and the last km or two is unsealed. There is a good carpark at the start of the walkway.
Visitors are expected to show respect in the area which is sacred to Maori. The upper lake is Tapu, and food should not be eaten there. Picnic tables are provided at the lower lake near the carpark. Toilets are provided at the carpark.
