The Hydrabad was built in 1865 in Scotland. Whilst bound for Adelaide on 24 June 1878 it came ashore on Waitarere Beach in a bad storm. This was a deliberate attempt by the captain for the safety of passengers and crew, and there was no loss of life.

The wreck is advertised in Waitarere Beach, and it is a pleasant walk along the shore. It is about 1.8 km from the end of Waitarere Beach Road, or you can drive down Rua Avenue and access the beach from Hydrabad Avenue. From here it is about 800 m to the wreck. Don't expect anything great - in fact, it is quite hard to find! Look out for a post with 30 km/hr and "Total Fire Ban". The wreck is near this post - some rust iron hull can be seen poking out of the sand.

Either park at the end of Waitarere Beach Road beside the surf club, or drive down to the end of Rua Ave and access the beach from there.

Please keep to tracks when walking over the sand dunes to the shore, to preserve the fragile coastal environment.
