Overview
Short loop in Boundary Stream Mainland Island reserve
Grade
Beginner
Access
Foot
Description
This is the gentlest track in the reserve and suitable for most people. Boundary Stream is a mainland island reserve where predators are being eradicated to encourage native species to thrive. The bird-song in the area is as close to pre-human population of NZ as you will find anywhere. There are Kiwi in the bush areas (which you may hear in the night). The loop track is well marked. There are views through the bush over the cliffs mid-way round - it is easy to forget that the area is over 700 metres above sea level. The signage says 1 hour walk, but should take no more than 30 - 45 minutes.
Boundary Stream

Getting there
Boundary Stream reserve is about 60 km north of Napier. Take SH2 north out of Napier and continue around the coast to Wairoa (don't take SH5 to Taupo). At Lake Tutira there is a store, take the left (Matahorua Road) and continue to the signpost at Pohokura Road (Matahorua road continues right to Shine Falls). Go up Pohokura Road, a short distance along the seal runs out and the last 12 km are unsealed. Along the way you will pass Opouahi Reserve and Bellbird Bush. There is a wide carpark at Boundary Stream reserve.
Other notes
Cycles not permitted in the bird reserve.
There are rough toilets just off the car park (opposite side to Tumanako walk). There is no freshwater or other facilites beyond the Tutira store, so be prepared and self-sufficient.
Note that this is a Kiwi area so take car if travelling through after dark.
