Chrystalls Bend

Inland riverbank walk from Otaki bridge with pleasant picnic spot at end
Grade
Easy
Access
Bike and Foot
Description
Park in the same carpark as for the Otaki River walk beside the quarry on the left as you cross the bridge going north. However, the Chrystalls Bend walk follows the riverbank inland, going underneath the highway and upstream for about 2 km. It is shorter and more interesting than the Highway-to-Sea walk, and at the end there is a large pond with picnic tables. The track is still being formed and may be muddy in places where heavy equipment has been working, but there are some excellent bridges and tree planting along the route. The track is marked with green triangles, but it is easy to stray onto the gravel road - this may be okay at weekends but watch out for heavy vehicles.
Sign says 1 hour return walking, but I'd allow 1.5 hours. About 30 minutes return cycling (as track is uneven in places).
