Historic mill track at the foot of the Tararua Ranges

Bike and Foot

This is a lovely bush walk with abundant bird life, and is one of the gateways into the Tararuas (track leads up to a hut from the loop track). It follows an old mill road, and there is a sign showing the site of a tree nursery from the 1930's near the Mikimiki Road end. I recommend starting at the Kiriwhakapapa end as the carpark and picnic area is much better provisioned that Mikimiki Road. The track is well formed with bridges, and gentle gradients, but can be a bit muddy in places after rain.

Mikimiki track entrance Mikimiki Road end

If walking, allow 2 hours each way. If you don't have a car at each end you will need to return the same way.

Getting there

The best carpark is at the end of Kiriwhakapapa Road, which is about 10 km north of Masterton on SH2. The last few kilometres of the road are gravel, and narrow in places. There are two carparks in Mikimiki Road, but there is more gravel and the road is narrower. Kiriwhakapapa Road end has toilets and a large picnic area.

Other notes

Suitable for mountain bikes, but you will need to carry bikes down steps in a couple of places. There are 3 or 4 river crossings, and the track can be muddy after rain.
