Description

Starting from the corner of Ghuznee St and Willis Street at the motorway exit where you can see the remains of the old road to the Terrace tunnel, there is a signposted walkway leading up towards The Terrace. The walkway goes up to MacDonald Crescent (and also continues round over the top of the Terrace Tunnel and back down to the top of Ghuznee Street. A short way along MacDonald Crescent there are some steps leading up to the left to join with The Terrace. Turn right, go up The Terrace and turn left into Salamanca Road. About 250 metres up Salamanca Road on the right hand side is a Squash Club. The City to Sea Walkway is signpost here and the track leads from the back of the squash club carpark through the trees to an open grassy area. If you picnic here, you are sitting above the cars going through the Terrace Tunnel. The track continues on the other side of the lawn past the back yards of houses on The Terrace to a small carpark, and down to a track that runs for a short distance along the side of Wellington motorway, to a car parking area near Everton Terrace. Cross over the motorway at Everton Terrace and walk left along the top of Boulcott St and then take the signposted walkway left into the trees, which heads uphill for about 250 metres to the playing fields and memorial fountain. This track through the trees has steps in places, but can also be muddy after rain. The walkway skirts around the outside of the playing fields and emerges near the sharp corner of Salamanca Road and Kelburn Parade. About 100 metres up Kelburn Parade on the right-hand side is an accessway (lots of steps) up to Rawhiti Terrace. Turn right along Rawhiti Terrace and about 150 metres along there is a walkway leading uphill to join up with the station at the top of the Cable Car at the botanic gardens.

Getting there

Either take the cable car to the top stop at Kelburn, or walk up Willis Street to Ghuznee St.
