Description

"You can't beat Wellington on a good day", and a stroll along the waterfront is very pleasant. You will go past bars and restaurants, art and sculpture, dancing water fountains, canoe hire, diving platforms for a quick dip in the harbour, and more. There is a map of the waterfront on the wharf in front of Macs Brewery at the Taranaki St gates. Also at the Taranaki St gates is the museum of New Zealand, Te Papa.

The walk continues past the small yacht mariner and the Overseas Terminal, and on to Oriental Parade. This is a popular spot in summer and if cycling you will need to watch out for walkers, joggers, push-chairs and skateboarders. Past Freyburg swimming pool there is a small spot of golden sand which was imported from Nelson.

Near the eastern tip of Oriental Parade there are some good spots for watching yachts in the harbour, and there are some small areas across the road for sitting and eating lunch.

Getting there

The wharf area is a short walk from anywhere in central Wellington. The start of the walk is about 250 metres from the Wellington railway station. Buses run round Oriental Parade.
