Description
I have included this track as I lived in Wellington for over 10 years working in the central city without knowing this area existed. Students often find it on their way to/from University. Tucked up behind St Marys of the Angels church on the corner of Boulcott and Willis St are some alley ways and grassy areas suitable for picnics in summer. The area is called Terrace Gardens, and includes historic Flagstaff hill which has a flagpole and memorial plaque.
The route shown begins on the corner of O'Reily Av and Boulcott St just in front of St Mary's church entrance. From there you go up a few steps, then instead of continuing up more steps to The Terrace, turn left and walk past a small grassy area up some more steps to Flagstaff Hill. This is a good picnic spot. Continue up and to the right, where there is an exit to Percival St, then turn right and continue back past the grassy areas and backyards of old houses. At the end of the pathway turn left and climb the steps of Allenby Terrace to The Terrace. About 100 metres on the right from the top are the steps of Church Street which will take you back down to Boulcott St and past the grounds of St Mary's church.
Approx. 150 metres further up Boulcott St is Antrim House(usually open for public viewing), the headquarters of NZ Historic Places trust.
Getting there
Most buses passing through central Wellington on the way to the railway station will stop on Manners St or Willis St near the Boulcott St corner.
Other notes
If you want a longer walk, you can exit along Percival St or The Terrace and join the Kelburn Park walk.
