Shortcut from Hervey Way (new subdivision) to Kaiwharawhara via sports ground

Grade

Intermediate

Access

Foot

Description

This is a rough shortcut through the bush above the sports grounds next to Rangiora Av. It is a well worn track through the trees, and the footpath at the end of Hervey Way suggests that the path may be more fully developed in the future.

From Hervey Way, continue right to the end of the footpath on the right, the track continues into the trees from the end of the footpath. From the sports ground, the track is marked with a pink dot on a tree at the bottom left of the sports grounds at the top of the steps.

It used to be possible to walk up through the trees behind the sports ground and join up with the Kaiwhara bridleway but the new subdivision has changed access. New tracks may be created in the future.

The bush above the sports grounds was one of the places where Robert Jones ("bucket man" - a well known vagrant to Wellington) slept in a tent prior to his death in 2003.

Getting there

There is a bus stop on Hutt Road near Rangiora Avenue.

Other notes

Hershey Way is a new subdivision, building in the area may change access. The sports grounds are currently closed for redevelopment, but this does not affect access to this path.
