Description
This is a loop that encompasses a representative selection of easy tracks on the southern half of Mt Victoria. The companion Mt Vic Intermediate loop, which also starts and ends at the saddle point on Alexandra Road, encompasses a selection of intermediate grade tracks on the northern half of Mt Victoria.
The loop is well sign-posted, with small markers that show a bike and the word "Easy".
From the map board on the western side of the Alexandra Road saddle point, head across Alexandra Road and down Hataitai to City. At the sealed road, turn right and then proceed around the western side of the velodrome.
Off the southern end of the velodrome, follow Newtown to Hataitai for 0.35km. Turn left down hill and out into an open grassy area. Skirt around the tree line parallel with Ruahine Street, and then follow the signs back into the trees.
Keep heading south and you'll soon emerge into another open grassy area, this time above the Mt Vic Skills Area. If you like, drop down to the Mt Vic Skills Area for a play – otherwise continue up the gentle slope to meet Alexandra Road.
Turn sharply north and cruise along the side of Alexandra Road for almost 0.2km, to the point where Southern Mt Victoria and Newtown to Hataitai coincide for 0.1km. At the car parking area, where Southern Mt Victoria and Newtown to Hataitai diverge, continue following Southern Mt Victoria due north for 0.3km until you cross Alexandra Road outside the old fever hospital.
Climb the easier option up the hill outside the old fever hospital. Skirt around the edge of Alexandra Park to its northwestern corner.
Finally, take the Alexandra Park track around the western side of Mount Alfred to complete the easy loop, finishing back at the Alexandra Road saddle point.
