Description
A few metres from the S Bend end of this track there is a small wooden bridge. Painted on the western railing of the bridge is "Glow worm grotto", referring to the adjacent mossy rockface.
Just past the bridge there is a low-hanging tree. On one side of the tree someone has helpfully painted "Duck". The other side of the tree says "M.Y.H!", presumably meaning "mind your head".
About halfway along the track there is a faint track that deviates from a concrete stormwater cover. This side track runs behind some houses and ends after little more 0.1km at a gate that says "Private".
As you approach Birdwood Steps, there are a couple of options. The straight track drops sharply down onto Birdwood Steps. The other option zigzags up to a slightly higher place on Birdwood Steps. Either way, the easiest exit is to go up to Ponsonby Road – the alternative involves descending a lot of steps down to Birdwood Street near Karori Tunnel.
Getting there
Southern end meets S Bend at a hairpin bend about 0.2km from S Bend's western end.
Northern end is near the top of Birdwood Steps, just off the end of Ponsonby Road.
Other notes
The unofficial signage at both ends of this track refers to it as the "Kohekohe Bush Track", presumably reflecting the Kohekohe trees that are common in the surounding Kaiwharawhara Stream valley.
