Description

This is the second stage in a plan to build a track from the Polhill wind turbine to near the summit of Hawkins Hill.

Stage One was the development of Car Parts Extension, which runs from the wind turbine to a saddle point at the entry to Long Gully Station. That stage became ridable from end to end in February 2009.

Stage Two started in March 2009 with a pilot track being cut through the scrub from the southern end of Car Parts Extension and from the intersection of the Tip Track and Red Rocks. Development of this stage has been approved in principle by the Wellington City Council. Building of the actual track will be subject to final approval of the proposed route.

Getting there

Northern end starts from the southern end of Car Parts Extension, at the entry to Long Gully Station.

The southern end is at the intersection of Tip Track and Red Rocks, just below the summit of Hawkins Hill.

Other notes

The name "Barking Emu" refers to the ostriches at the northern end of the track and the dogs at the Castle which is closer to the southern end. It was found out later that they are ostriches (with only two toes) rather than emus (which have three toes).
