A tough alternate tramping route to Mt Climie

This is an alternate tramping route up Mt Climie for experienced trampers only. The track is well formed in most places, but is unmarked so you need your bush skills to avoid getting lost. You WILL lose the track a couple of times so you need to be confident in your ability to find it again!

It is best to do this route clockwise (at least the first time). Start at the Tane's track entrance near the car park at S41 06.562 E175 09.925. Walk along the gravel track for a few hundred metres until you come to a large tree with a seat beside it at S41 06.000 E175 09.356. The track begins to the left of the seat and heads up behind the big tree steeply uphill. As noted, there are no markers on the track, but it is well formed in most places. Eventually you reach the top of the ridge at about 600m asl at S41 06.909 E175 09.894. You then follow the ridge around until it meets the 4WD main Mt Climie road at S41 08.356 E175 09.000. The exit to the 4WD road isn't that obvious and is hard to spot from the road if you are not familiar with the track.

The ridge track is slow going. It is muddy in places. There are occasional views out west across the valley. There is an occasional white or orange track marker, but in the main the track is unmarked. Allow about 3 hours to walk the track.

Getting there

Park at the top car park in Tunnel Gully.

Other notes

Good footwear and bush gear is recommended.
