Description

This is an easy loop walk starting from and returning to the passenger ferry terminal at Ferry Landing. This is a representative loop walk only, many variations are possible. Starting from the ferry terminal, immediately up the hill on the left is the cemetery. The track then joins Purangi Road and joins Front Beach as Bayview. At low tide you can go along the beach to Flaxmill Bay (at high tide you will get wet going around the rocks).

There is a track going up into Shakespeare Cliff reserve from the end of Flaxmill Bay. There are steps but the gradient is reasonably gentle. At the top there is a grassy area, and there are good lookout opportunities on the way. Coming back down there is an optional track to Lonely Bay (nice for swimming).

The track briefly meets the road before going over a footbridge over a creek to to Cooks Beach. It is optional how far along the beach you wish to go (there is the Cooks Memorial at the far end).

Returning initially the same way, on the opposite side of the road at the start of Flaxmill Bay the Maramatotara track heads up the hill into the bush. This track is much steeper than Shakespeare Reserve, but has good lookout points at the top with views over Whitianga. The track up from Purangi Road has good steps, but is less well formed going down to Back Bay and the historic Pa site, with lots of tree roots to clamber over. It is worth heading up to the old Pa site and Whitianga Rock, for more views over Whitianga.

Allow 2 - 3 hours for the loop walk.

Getting there

Return passenger ferry fare from Whitianga Esplanade is $6 for an adult. The ferry runs continuously during summer. Alternatively, you can drive round from Whitianga and park at one of the bays.
