Kawau Island, Auckland, New Zealand
Easy loop walk to the old Coppermine and chimney stack.
The loop walk shown is a typical route taken by visitors to the island. There are several other tracks, but this is the route taken by many people. Allow about 1 hour for the loop walk.
Starting and finishing from the grass lawn behind the Mansion House. Taking the right hand route heading away from the Mansion House, the track passes by Lady Bay. There are signs warning visitors to stay away from the cliff edges here as erosion and fallen trees now leave the edges exposed. The track climbs gently, and about half way there is a lookout spot with some picnic tables, and views to the Coppermine. The track descends to Dispute Cove (where swimming is possible), and at low tide you can continue along the rocks to the Coppermine.
Returning, the track goes uphill and joins the old Coach Road, which is a wide and gravel track back to the Mansion House.
Look out for the North Island Weka along the route.
Ferries leave daily from Sandspit, and stop at the Mansion House wharf.
In summer, car parking can be a problem at the Sandspit wharf. You may need to find parking along the road beside the camping ground in Sandspit. The cafe beside the Mansion House has a good selection of food and drink (and ice cream).
