Harts Creek Hide

Harts Creek Hide

Lake Ellesmere, Canterbury, New Zealand

Short riverbank walk to Lake Ellesmere and a bird hide through a small wildlife reserve.

This is a 20 minute walk in a small wildlife reserve along a riverbank to the edge of Lake Ellesmere, where there is a small bird hide. It is quite popular with the locals.

From the carpark, go through the gate and follow the track along the riverbank. There are boardwalks across the muddy spots, and other than a style and gate or two, it is an easy walk for almost everyone. The final section of boardwalk out to the bird hide can become covered with a few cm of water in the lake is high.

The beginning section can also be completed across the fields (marked with yellow topped poles), with styles at the fences, but it is easier to follow the riverbank track.
