Lake Rotokare

Lake Rotokare

Central Taranaki, Taranaki, New Zealand

Popular walking and picnic spot and wildlife reserve near Eltham.

A flat and well signposted walking track around the perimeter of Lake Rotokare. There are boardwalks, but there may be muddy spots in some places. The track has been upgraded on the southern side. The track through the bush along the northern shore is a little more uneven and there may be one or two spots where trees have fallen across the track. Allow 1.5 hours for the loop walk back to the carpark.

There is a predator proof fence around the perimeter. At the entrance you must drive through a double-gate. There are buttons to operate the gate, to allow visitors in but keep predators out.

More adventurous walkers can attempt a longer walk around the fenceline perimeter (route not shown on the map).

Getting there

Traveling north on SH3 into Eltham, turn right on to King Edward Street / Rawhitiora Road following the signposts to Lake Rotokare. (Do not take Rotokare Road which is a few km south of Eltham - it does NOT go to Lake Rotokare!). The entrance to Lake Rotokare is about 7 km down this road. You will need to go through the electronically operated double-gates on arrival at the lake.

Other notes

Boating is permitted on the lake in summer months.
