Mt John

Mt John

Mt Cook, Canterbury, New Zealand

Easy circular walk with good views, or longer walk along the edge of Lake Tekapo.

There are two separate walks shown on the route below. From the carpark at Mt John there is a short circular walk around the top of the hill near the Mt John Observatory. This area now has world heritage status to protect the clear skies beside Lake Tekapo. There is a trig and lookout. The circular walk should not take longer than 30 minutes back to the carpark.

Trig on Mt John

Alternatively, there is a much longer loop walk down to Tekapo, then up the shoreline and back up to Mt John. This loop will take 2 - 3 hours, and involves a descent and ascent of a few hundred metres, which is quite tough on a hot day! The track is well signposted and is popular with tourists.

Getting there

Turn off SH8 on to Godley Peaks Road a few kilometres west of Tekapo, and follow the signs up to the summit of Mt John. There is a carpark there with cafe and lookout, and an information sign for the start of the walkway.

Other notes

The Lupins in the area look beautiful in summer, but they are in fact a weed!

In winter the area may be covered with snow (it is at 1000 metres) and may be unsuitable for walking.
