Location: South Manawatu, Manawatu, New Zealand
Overview:
Easy cycling trail from Foxton township to Foxton Beach following a proper cycling track.
Grade: Easy
Access: Bike and Foot
Description:
This track begins beside the Primary School (corner of Duncan St in Foxton) just off SH1. It is a straight walk or ride down to Foxton Beach and along the sea-front to the trees near the camping ground.
Foxton Beach is well known for water activities, and is also one of the best spots in NZ for observing migratory wading birds. There is a viewing platform along the promenade and expect to see a few keen enthusiasts with binoculars or telescope.
The main cycleway follows the highway (80 km/hr area) for about 2 km between Foxton and Foxton Beach, but is well off the road so is quite safe for young rider.
Starting from the pine trees near the motor camp in Foxton beach, there is a fairly new well defined track along the promenade and past the wharf and boat club. You then go through a small playground, then turn right and head up the footpath for about 750 metres for the start of the cycle track proper. This terminates at Foxton Beach Road turns into Lady's Mile at Foxton township. Go right and visit the windmill. For variation on return, approx. midway between Foxton and Foxton Beach there is fork in the road to the right - if you head down Palmer Road you will enter Foxton Beach at the back of the town. Turn left along Nash Parade and you will end up back at the pine trees near the camping ground. Note that this alternative route is along the road so take care as there are lots of fast moving 4WD vehicles.

Getting there:
By car - either park just off the main street (eg near the old Woolpack factory on Duncan St) in Foxton and ride down Ladys Mile/Foxton Beach Road. Or park beside the trees on Pinewood Road near the motor camp near the birdwatching information sign.
