Location: Hawkins Hill, Wellington, New Zealand
Overview:
Two-way track that runs from the southern end of Car Parts Extension to the intersection of the Tip Track and Red Rocks.
Grade: Intermediate
Access: Under construction, see note and reports. Expected to open in Spring 2011.
Description:
This is the second stage in a plan to build a track from the Polhill wind turbine to near the summit of Hawkins Hill.
Stage One was the development of Car Parts Extension, which runs from the wind turbine to a saddle point at the entry to Long Gully Station. That stage became ridable from end to end in February 2009.
Stage Two - this track - started in March 2009 with a pilot track being cut through the scrub from the southern end of Car Parts Extension to the intersection of the Tip Track and Red Rocks. Contractors completed the initial build in June 2011, though refinement work continues and the track is expected in open in Spring 2011.
This track meanders up the hill at a moderate gradient. Most of the way it is just below the sealed Hawkins Hill access road. The greatest deviation from the road occurs on a ridge below the Airways Corporation UHF building (which is the end point of the annual Hawkins Hill Climb Challenge).

Getting there:
Northern end starts from the southern end of Car Parts Extension, at the entry to Long Gully Station.
The southern end is at the intersection of Tip Track and Red Rocks, just below the summit of Hawkins Hill.
Other notes:
The name "Barking Emu" refers to the ostriches at the northern end of the track and the dogs at the Castle which is closer to the southern end. It was found out later that they are ostriches (with only two toes) rather than emus (which have three toes).
Length: 2.38km
