Location: Makara Peak, Wellington, New Zealand
Overview:
4wd road providing access to electricity transmission pylons 17 and 18.
Grade: Easy
Access: Bike and Foot
Description:
Usually only the northern one-third of this road is frequented by recreational users, as that's where there is an intersection with Sally Alley and Missing Link. People typically emerge from the western end of Sally Alley, have a short rest at the intersection, and then continue on to either Missing Link (directly opposite Sally Alley) or up the road to Snake Charmer.
The climb up to Snake Charmer is moderately steep, and can be tricky when wet due to the slick rock and clay surface of the road.
About two-thirds of the way along, towards the southern end of the road, there is a short branch that goes to pylon 17. This branch, and the southern end of the road in general, is a dead-end, so return the same way.
Getting there:
Northern end descends from Snake Charmer.
Bottom is at pylon 18, having passed pylon 17 along the way.
Length: 0.68km
Conditions: 4wd
