Location: Wainuiomata trail project, Wellington, New Zealand
Overview:
Gentle loop around the wetlands at the end of Waiu Street.
Grade: Beginner
Access: Bike and Foot
Description:
This is an easy, two-way loop around the wetlands at the end of Waiu Street.
Travelling clockwise around the loop, you'll start with a fairly gentle climb along a wide and smooth gravel path. About 0.3km from the start you'll pass the bottom of the downhill-only Beeline track. Continue along the wide path for another 0.7km, to the head of the valley.
The eastern half of the loop is a reasonably wide single track that generally descends, again at a gentle gradient. Cruise through the bush for 0.4km to a 120m long boardwalk – which includes three passing bays to allow for two-way traffic. After a bit more single track, including a little double-back loop (with a shortcut alternative) and a wooden bridge over a small creek, the track heads across open territory back to where it started.
Full-length video of the track biked clockwise, with labels showing the intersections with other tracks as they are passed: [video] Shortened video showing track riden anti-clockwise: [video]
Getting there:
There are multiple paths from the carpark at Waiu Street to begin the loop, as indicated by the map.
As the track's name suggests this really is a loop, so you'll end up back where you started.
Other notes:
Much of the track appears to follow an old benched track that had become overgrown.
Length: 2.73km
Conditions: Double track
