Location: Catlins, Otago, New Zealand

Rainforest bush walk beside stream

Grade: Easy

Access: Foot

This is an easy walk covering part of the larger day walk along the full length of the Catlin's River track. There is easy access from Catlin's Road and the gradient is relatively flat along most of the track.

Park beside the DoC sign on Catlin's Road and walk down a few hundred metres and across the swingbridge (1 person at a time). The track then follows the river for about an hour, until a second swingbridge is encountered. Return the same way.

This route is about 1 hour each way, and is part of a longer Catlin's River Walk track (which takes about 6 hours).

Getting there:
From Dunedin drive south on SH1 to Balclutha, then turn on to the Owaka highway and follow the road to Owaka. Continue through Owaka on the Papatowai Highway and turn right on to Catlin's Valley Road. At Tawanui take Morris Saddle Road and then turn left on to Catlin's Road. This will be gravel from here on. Follow Catlin's Road (and do not turn on to Puketawa Road) past the DoC camp ground at the main entrance to the Catlin's River walk. Look for the DoC sign on the left about 2 km past the Puketawa Road turnoff. There is no carpark for the river access track, but sufficient room for a few cars to park at the side of the road nearby.

Other notes:
This is a good area for sighting Mohua (Yellowhead), a rare native bird.
