Western Hills

A range of mostly grassy hills from Makara Peak in the south to Mt Kaukau in the north. Starting from Makara Peak heading north the range takes in Karori Park, Wrights Hill, British Peak, Crow's Nest and finally Mt Kaukau.

Except for around Karori Park the ridge is open and exposed and Wellington's predominant nor-west winds can certainly make themselves known. However all this exposure provides some great views over the South Island, Wellington city and harbour, and on really clear days you can even see Mt Taranaki some 300kms to the North.

There used to be various access issues to the farmland parts of this ridge. However in 2005 Meridian Energy (a major land owner in the area) opened it up to appeal to the public for it's then proposed wind farm in the Quartz Hill, Outlook Hill and Terawhiti area.
